The Princess Bride is one of those movies that I could watch over and over again. Its story is timeless and hits all the key points of a great story: comedy, adventure, fantasy, romantic love, romance, true love, and fairy tale. Toss in some good vs. evil, unrequited love, smugglers, castles, and lots of swordplay and you’ve got yourself a rip-roaring film.
I saw the film before I read the book and the book was just as good. William Goldman obviously had fun when he wrote the original story which was actually a story within a story. He even messed around with the ‘facts’ about the publication of story. What a guy. He was meta before meta was a thing. Goldman wrote some other screenplays that you might have heard of like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All The President’s Men.
The cast got together for a reunion in 2011 to mark the 25th Anniversary of the film’s anniversary and somehow it only just twigged that the film has been around that long. The image above is from a photo shoot that the cast did at their reunion. Can you identify the cast members?
On a related note, Mandy “Inigo Montoya” Patinkin was interviewed by Jian Ghomeshi on CBC Radio’s Q, last August. It’s a great listen.
